Sediment, water and microbial sludge collect below the draw-off, waiting to block the first filter downstream once the tank is used again. Whether old diesel can be saved depends on how far gone it is. Lightly contaminated fuel can sometimes be polished — filtered and dewatered — but water-laden, bugged or long-standing diesel is normally removed and the tank cleaned. Disposal is about where the diesel ends up and being able to prove it. Once collected it goes to a permitted facility for recovery or destruction, and you get a waste transfer note recording what left, when and where it went — your duty-of-care evidence if anyone ever asks. Disposal is where duty of care bites. Under the rules the waste is yours until it reaches a permitted facility, so the transfer note issued in Castlebay — recording what left, when and where it went — is the document that keeps you covered if it is ever questioned. ## Local Scottish old diesel disposal in Castlebay: the facts Fuel | Old diesel | Service | Collection and licensed disposal | Council area | Na h-Eileanan Siar | Why it degrades | Oxidises, drops sediment and grows diesel bug where water is present | Typical sources | Farm tanks, generators, plant, HGVs, boats, bowsers, bulk stores | Classification | Hazardous waste — waste transfer note issued | Regulator | SEPA | Typical cost | Quoted per litre | Attendance | Collected and disposed of under licence | Helpline | 01295 380724 | ## Where old diesel comes from around Castlebay Across Castlebay and its surroundings we collect and dispose of old diesel from standby and rental gensets taken out of service, and pump and compressor sets sold on. A registered carrier attends home, farm, depot, marina and commercial sites, pumps out the old diesel and issues a waste transfer note on site. **Can contaminated diesel be cleaned instead of removed?** Polishing can recover lightly contaminated diesel, but heavily bugged or watered fuel is usually removed and the tank cleaned. We can advise once we know the state of it. **Will you empty a farm or bulk tank?** Yes — domestic, farm, estate and commercial bulk tanks, bowsers and drums. Give us the volume in litres and the access and you get a price and a slot before we travel. **Do you clean the tank as well?** We remove the fuel and can arrange a tank clean where the bug or sludge means the vessel needs it before reuse. Tell us the condition when you call. **How quickly can old diesel be collected?** Often the same day for accessible sites, otherwise a booked slot. The quote and window are confirmed before anyone travels. ### One operator, four sites Fuel Fixer Scotland is the Scottish arm of Fuel Fixer Ltd.
