It is not clean fuel but a mix of water, degraded oil and bacterial matter, and clearing a tank properly means taking that away too, not just pumping off the good oil. For a leaking or corroded tank, getting the oil and sludge out is the first safe step before the tank is cleaned, cut down or removed. Describe the tank's condition when you call so the right kit comes. Safe disposal routes the heating oil to a licensed facility for recovery or destruction and documents it, so the duty of care sits with a paper trail rather than with you guessing. Done properly, disposal gives you a defensible trail. The fuel from Grantown on Spey is destroyed or recovered at a licensed facility, and the documentation issued is what protects you under the duty-of-care regime. ## Local Scottish heating oil disposal in Grantown on Spey: the facts Fuel | Heating oil | Service | Collection and licensed disposal | Council area | Highland | Why it degrades | Kerosene or gas oil; collects water, sludge and bacteria and corrodes tanks | Typical sources | Tank decommissioning, heating changes, contamination, sales, spills, estates | Classification | Hazardous waste — waste transfer note issued | Regulator | SEPA | Typical cost | Quoted per litre | Attendance | Collected and disposed of under licence | Helpline | 01295 380724 | ## Where heating oil comes from around Grantown on Spey The heating oil we collect and dispose of in and around Grantown on Spey tends to come from old steel tanks rusting from the inside that have to be emptied before removal.
