Call Now01342 775316Petrol and diesel engines are very different, and neither will run on the wrong fuel. Left in, the wrong fuel can cause serious engine damage. The single most important thing is to not run the engine, because the harm happens once it’s circulating. It’s not a sensible DIY job — our Scottish mobile units come to you and drain it fast, usually getting you back on the road within the hour. No towing. No garage. No recovery bills.
1. Don’t start the car (or pull over and switch off as soon as it’s safe). 2. Put your hazard lights on and keep everyone safe. 3. Call Fuel Fixer Scotland on 01342 775316. A mobile unit reaches you in about 46 minutes and drains it on the spot — roadside, forecourt or at home, anywhere in Scotland.
Both are bad news. Petrol in a diesel is the more serious: petrol strips the lubrication a diesel system relies on, so it usually stalls or runs rough. Diesel in a petrol won’t burn properly, so the car loses power and runs flat. Either way the cost of draining it is tiny next to the damage of leaving it in — so don’t drive, and call us.
Any misfuel, any contaminated tank, anywhere in Scotland — roadside, forecourt, home or yard. One number for all of it.
The classic misfuel. Petrol strips the lubrication a diesel relies on, so it stalls or runs rough. Don’t start it — we drain and flush the system, reset and restart, and hand you fresh fuel so you can drive on.
Diesel won’t burn in a petrol engine, so the car loses power and runs flat. We remove it on the spot, flush the lines and filters, and get you moving again.
Water, debris, a bad batch or degraded fuel cause much the same trouble as a misfuel. We fully drain the tank, lines and engine and refill with clean fuel.
A full fuel-system drain for cars, vans, HGVs, boats, plant and standing vehicles — with licensed, environmentally compliant disposal of everything we remove.
Avg. arrival time 46 mins, coverage right across Scotland — Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth, Stirling and everywhere between. We fix it while you wait – roadside, forecourt or home.
Petrol washes away the oiliness a diesel system needs for lubrication, leaving pumps, pistons and cylinders open to rapid wear. Diesel in a petrol engine won’t combust cleanly. Either way it blocks filters and strips lubrication — but if you act quickly, it’ll be fine. We fix it on the spot so you can drive on.
We bring specialist equipment to remove the fuel safely, flushing the lines, filters, pumps and engine. The picture below compares clean diesel with contaminated mixed fuel pulled from a car just 24 hours after misfuelling – that’s why it should be removed fast.

Our Scottish technicians bring specialist equipment to remove the wrong fuel safely – flushing your tank, fuel lines, filters, pumps and engine. The drain, then reset and restart, takes about 30 minutes. Then you’re good to go.
We carry equipment for all makes and models, and we’ll supply you clean fuel at regular pump prices so you can drive on immediately. If any follow-up work is needed our technician will advise you — but that’s rare.

We’re not a call centre that sends a stranger. Fuel Fixer in Scotland is Scottish-owned, and we employ Scottish engineers and executives, built to look after Scottish drivers — from the Borders to the Highlands.
A genuinely Scottish business — local owners who answer to Scottish drivers, not a faceless franchise.
We employ Scottish engineers and executives — trained people based in Scotland, in fully equipped units, who know the roads and the weather you’re stuck in.
Mobile units across the central belt and beyond — Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth and further afield.

The fuel we remove is never dumped. A licence is required to transport and store it, so it’s held securely and safely, then re-refined and returned to the fuel supply chain. It’s the responsible, fully compliant way to handle removed fuel — reflected in our ISO 9001 & 14001 certification — and it’s built into every callout at no surprise cost to you.
That same fleet is what lets us reach you in about 46 minutes wherever you are in Scotland.
Your car might go a short distance on the right fuel left in the lines — but as the wrong fuel works through the system it starts to do damage. There’s really no safe amount of wrong fuel; it needs to be fully removed.
Even if the car has been driven and now refuses to start, or you see white smoke in the exhaust, we deal with any problem caused by misfuelling short of major engine failure. If you’re not sure, call our hotline for sensible, no-pressure advice and we’ll come to you.

Fuel Fixer started with one van and is now the biggest specialist in its field, with mobile units across Britain and Ireland. In Scotland that scale is local: Scottish-owned, and we employ Scottish engineers and executives, and it’s all we do. We lead the field in service and technical expertise.
Our policies on safety, environmental protection, fair dealing and staff care are taken seriously — as reflected in our ISO 9001 & 14001 certification. If you experience any problem after we finish, you’ll have our hotline for further advice and help.

We serve individual motorists and commercial operators alike — including contract work for insurers, recovery companies and main dealers.
Not sure we cover yours? Call 01342 775316 and ask — we almost certainly do.
Most garages don’t keep the specialist equipment needed to fully drain a modern fuel system — so they often call us anyway. Some main dealers treat a misfuel as a windfall and replace expensive components unnecessarily; we’ve heard of repairs quoted up to £10,000 on cars that hadn’t even been started. A proper roadside drain costs a tiny fraction of that, and you drive away the same day.
Provided you act quickly, you’re very unlikely to suffer any serious damage. In the great majority of cases the car is up and running again as soon as we’ve drained the fuel. It’s best if you haven’t started the car. The longer the wrong fuel remains in your tank, fuel lines and engine, the more damage it does — so get it removed as soon as you can.
Usually not, if you stopped as soon as the car ran badly. A short distance on the fuel left in the lines is often survived without harm. The risk grows the further you drive, because the wrong fuel keeps circulating through the pump, filter and high-pressure lines. Stop driving, and call us — we’ll remove it and check it over.
Both are bad. In the short term, petrol in a diesel usually stalls the engine or makes it run rough and rattly. Diesel in a petrol makes it lose power and run flat. Left in, petrol can corrode and de-lubricate a diesel’s high-pressure pump and injectors — but the worst cases are rare and take a fair bit of driving to reach. In every case the cost of draining the wrong fuel is tiny next to the damage of leaving it in.
It’s never dumped. A licence is required to transport and store the fuel we remove, so it’s held securely and safely, and is ultimately re-refined and returned to the fuel supply chain. Disposal is fully compliant and included in the job.
Usually not. Some dealers treat a misfuel as a windfall and replace expensive components unnecessarily — we’ve heard of cars collected from forecourts that hadn’t even been started. Most garages don’t keep the specialist draining equipment we use and find it simpler to call us. The cost of draining the fuel is tiny next to needless component replacement.
It’s not recommended. The engine tends to run poorly, you may trigger dashboard lights that need clearing, and it may not restart when cold. You risk corroding hoses and seals and damaging fuel pumps. As the old saying goes — if you’re in a hole, stop digging. A full drain is usually the best and cheapest option.
On cars older than about 30 years, sometimes — if you don’t mind the taste. But modern cars have anti-siphon devices and saddle-shaped tanks with internal baffles that a normal hosepipe can’t reach, so it takes specialist equipment to do the job properly. There’s also the matter of disposing of the removed fuel legally, which we handle for you.
The symptoms of contaminated fuel are similar to a misfuel — in fact the wrong fuel is just one type of contamination. The cure is the same: fully drain the tank, fuel lines and engine, do any reset needed, and fill up with clean fuel. We deal with all of these every day.
Usually no. Fuel doesn’t “sit” or condense in a fuel filter — during a drain the filter is flushed by pumping clean fuel through it to purge it. A replacement filter costs only a few pounds and takes minutes, so be wary of inflated bills for it.
